Can we finally end the charade that progressive anti-Zionists are against antisemitism?

Susan Abulhawa is the best selling Palestinian author of all time. She has a history of rabidly antisemitic posts, but she justifies them as being merely "anti-Zionist." For example, she regularly refers to all Jews in Israel as "human garbage" but since she is not referring to all Jews worldwide, she could claim that this isn't antisemitic, which is usually enough for her fans and supporters to believe her.

Last week, however, she tweeted something that cannot possibly be seen as anything other than pure Jew-hatred, calling Holocaust survivors "Europe's garbage.":

Abulhawa is saying that Holocaust survivors are "garbage." Full stop.

And she is saying that Jews were ethnically cleansed from the countries they lived in because they deserved it.

There is no way to spin this. Abulhawa is as hateful as any neo-Nazi.

Yet - one cannot find a single anti-Zionist "progressive" voice who objects.

This mirrors the almost absolute silence - or tacit support - from the pro-Palestinian progressive crowd when another celebrated, award winning author, Alice Walker, wrote an antisemitic poem with fake Talmud quotes, accusing all Jews of "Jewish supremacism."

In fact, one of Walker's most prominent defenders was - Susan Abulhawa.

These aren't dog-whistles. They are exactly what the Nazis said about Jews. For the side that pretends to hate Nazis, the lack of response speaks volumes.

Again, the issue isn't that there are antisemites on the Left. Antisemitism is everywhere and no political side is immune. The issue is the complete silence from non-Jewish, anti-Zionist progressives when their own side unambiguously crosses the line into Nazi-style hate. The insistence that they distinguish between anti-Zionism and antisemitism are shown to be lies - because they refuse to do exactly that when it is staring them in the face.

When Nick Fuentes spouts his bile, at least prominent voices like Ted Cruz or the National Review say clearly that this is unacceptable. The opposition should be much stronger and the coddling of Tucker Carlson and even Candace Owens in many parts of the Right is unconscionable. But one cannot say that the Right is unambiguously tolerant of its own antisemitism as a whole. It is a battle taking place in public and in real time.

But try to find anyone condemning Walker or Abulhawa in The Nation or Mother Jones. The very rare "yes, but" articles about leftist antisemitism in progressive spaces prove the point - they spend more time about how the Right is attacking them than on actually confronting the antisemitism virus on their own side. Or they are decades old.

And they are overwhelmingly written by Jews.

There is no battle on the Left about progressive, or pro-Palestinian, antisemitism. That war was decided years ago.

So let's stop pretending that the anti-Zionist Left is against antisemitism. It is against right-wing antisemitism, which is hardly a brave position to take. But it not only tolerates progressive hate - it justifies when its own side crosses the line.
