Jake Wallis Simons: Israel Is Proving It Is Still the Only Democracy in the Middle East
You may have read that the situation in Israel is dire. People are talking of the end of democracy. Take a step back, however. These political convulsions are not the end of the world.

The two groups of protesters - Netanyahu supporters have also taken to the streets - both fly seas of Israeli flags. They both sing the national anthem. Both are demanding more democracy, not less. And the demonstrations have been non-violent. It could be argued that protests in France have been less peaceful.

Yes, there is reason to be concerned about the polarization these events are fostering. But what people are arguing about is the arcane matter of balancing the relationship between the executive, legislature and judiciary.

The Israeli government has placed its reforms on hold. So much for dictatorship. And it is entering a period of negotiation. So much for the end of democracy.

The most striking thing about all of this is the passion with which Israelis are concerned about their democracy and their country.
Biden Meddles in Israeli Democracy
Biden’s comments threaten to further inflame an already divided Israeli society and come just weeks after the Washington Free Beacon reported that the State Department has been funding one of the anti-Netanyahu organizations fueling nationwide Israeli protests. The Jewish state has been besieged by far-left protests since Netanyahu unveiled his plan to rein in Israel’s Supreme Court, which has historically held great power over the country’s legislative branch.

"They cannot continue down this road. And I’ve sort of made that clear," Biden told reporters on Tuesday. "Hopefully the prime minister will act in a way that he can try to work out some genuine compromise, but that remains to be seen." Biden also said that he has not communicated directly with Netanyahu on the issue, instead instructing the U.S. ambassador to deliver this message.

Biden’s comments conflict with his administration’s own messaging, which has been more positive after Netanyahu decided on Monday to put his judicial overhaul plans on ice until tensions in the country settle. White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said on Monday that the United States’ interest in the issue comes from a place "of respect and friendship." However, reports emerged on Wednesday that behind closed doors, Biden administration officials are saying Netanyahu’s government "has authoritarian leanings" that could erode the Jewish state’s democracy, according to Politico.

Netanyahu, in a response to Biden, said he would not be pressured by U.S. criticism.

"Israel is a sovereign country which makes its decisions by the will of its people and not based on pressures from abroad, including from the best of friends," the Israeli leader said in a statement. "My administration is committed to strengthening democracy by restoring the proper balance between the three branches of government, which we are striving to achieve via a broad consensus."

Pro-Israel Republicans also criticized the White House for jumping into the fray.

"Utterly disgraceful," Sen. Ted Cruz (R., Texas), a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, tweeted in response to the president’s comments. "Biden gleefully hosts anti-American radicals like [Brazilian president] Lula, while shunning close American allies like Netanyahu."

"It's clear that Biden and his officials are high from funding what they believe to be successful anti-government protests in Israel," Cruz said, referring to the Free Beacon’s earlier reporting.


The dire consequences of America’s Iran-friendly strategy
President Biden’s Gulf strategy, which is a continuation of former President Obama’s Iran-oriented doctrine, has benefited both China and Iran.

In addition to allowing Iran to keep its nuclear capabilities, this doctrine, which culminated in the 2015 Iran nuclear agreement, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), requires Saudi Arabia to “share” the region with Iran and allows Iran to expand its influence in the Arabian Gulf region and beyond. The pursuit of an Iran-friendly strategy has led to the decline of US influence and the growing erosion of its deterrence in the Arabian Gulf. Here are four likely consequences of the Iran-Saudi deal for the region:

1. Further US retrenchment from the Gulf region
The Iran-Saudi deal would expedite America’s retreat from the region. The China-mediated Iran- Saudi deal is a lose-lose game for America and at the same time, would empower China and Iran.

Even if they claim otherwise, the Obama and Biden administrations’ withdrawal strategy rests on accommodating Iran and allowing the establishment of a pro-Iran regional order in the Arabian Gulf to fill the ensuing power vacuum. The United States has been retreating from the Middle East region since 2009 and China is the biggest beneficiary of Team Biden-Obama’s Iran-centric retrenchment strategy. It’s a strategy that has pushed America’s Arab allies in the Gulf towards Beijing as Arab states seek to diversify their strategic ties to address their security concerns, including their fear of Iran’s drone and missile strikes on targets in the Gulf and the broader Middle East region.

Saudi Arabia’s decision to mend its relationship with Iran is directly related to the Obama doctrine, which seeks to help establish an Iran-dominated order in the Middle East region. The doctrine falsely assumes that Iran is a rational actor and that Iran’s hegemonic demands must be met positively in order to achieve peace and stability in this restive region.

3. A blow to the Abraham accords
With President Biden in office, pursuing the Abraham accords is not a US Middle East policy priority, anymore. Yet, Iran and Saudi Arabia occupy a unique place in Israeli premier Benjamin Netanyahu’s foreign policy. During his election campaign in 2022, Netanyahu made blocking Iran’s access to nuclear bombs and establishing formal diplomatic ties with Saudi Arabia his two top priorities.

Netanyahu has repeatedly stated that establishing diplomatic ties with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia – a key Muslim state and the heartland of Islam – would be a diplomatic “quantum leap” and would end the Israeli-Arab conflict, irrespective of the Palestinian issue. With Iran- Saudi rapprochement underway, Netanyahu’s hope for achieving peace with Saudi Arabia may become harder, if not impossible, and the expansion of the Israeli-Arab peace initiative, better known as the “Abraham Accords”, could come to a standstill.

The Abraham Accords is one of the greatest US foreign policy achievements in recent decades and this key diplomatic success needs to be reproduced with US diplomatic leadership. Otherwise, China is going to dominate the region’s diplomatic arena.

GOP’s Haley, Rubio slam Biden for rebuke of Netanyahu over judicial overhaul
White House Republican hopeful Nikki Haley and Florida Sen. Marco Rubio bashed US President Joe Biden on Wednesday for his rebuke of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his government’s highly contentious judicial overhaul.

“It’s outrageous for Joe Biden to lecture Israel on a matter that is entirely their domestic concern,” Haley tweeted. “We would never want the Israeli government to push America on issues surrounding our Supreme Court, and they wouldn’t do it. We should let Israelis decide this themselves.”

Haley, a former South Carolina governor and United Nations ambassador during the Donald Trump administration, has long touted her pro-Israel bona fides as part of her campaign to get the top slot on the Republican Party’s ticket for the 2024 election. However, she faces competition from, among others, her former boss and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.

Biden is widely assumed to be running for re-election.

Meanwhile, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, who has previously expressed discomfort over the security situation unfolding amid the Israeli government’s plan to shackle the High Court, suggested that Biden’s comments constituted a threat to Israel.

“If during these already dangerous days Israel is attacked by Hezbollah, Hamas or Iran it will be because Joe Biden decided to involve himself in Israeli politics,” Rubio tweeted.

South Carolina’s Sen. Lindsey Graham, who has also showed discomfort with the plan, wrote as part of a series of tweets about a call he had with Foreign Minister Eli Cohen, that “Israel and the United States have an unbreakable bond.”


NASA scientist forced to cancel appearance at Israeli meeting amid tensions with US
An astrophysicist with the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration has been forced to pull out of a conference in Israel amid tensions with the Biden administration over the judicial overhaul being pushed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government.

“A little sad today…was supposed to be traveling to Israel for some technical and public talks. But my travel authorization was revoked yesterday,” Amber Straugh wrote on Twitter, without elaborating.

According to a report today in the Haaretz daily, Straughn told organizers of the Israel Physical Society’s annual meeting that she was instructed by the State Department to cancel her appearance. Straughn had been set to be a keynote speaker.
In Arab World, Israel's Internal Conflict Dominates the News
Arab broadcasters carried rolling coverage of Israeli protests on Monday, drawing attention to the internal fight over government plans to overhaul the judiciary. Al Jazeera carried a stream of news from Israel, while al-Manar, run by Iran-backed Hizbullah, led its evening newscast with the story.

"As an Arab citizen I think that this is the beginning of the end of Israel, God willing," said Qusai al-Qaisi, a citizen of Jordan, whose government signed a peace treaty with Israel in 1994. "I don't want to say that I'm happy but I'm really happy that this is happening there." Mohammad Abdullatif in Syria said, "What's happening is definitely, for any Arab, good news."

Gaza political analyst Talal Okal said, "We hope it doesn't settle any time soon, and we hope it escalates and gets worse." Egyptian pensioner Hakem Sherif echoed criticism of Israeli policies, but also expressed respect for Israeli democracy. "Citizens have a space to express their opinions, they don't randomly arrest or carry out violent dispersal of protests."


Haredi couple brutally beaten by protesters in Tel Aviv
A haredi couple who were driving through Tel Aviv on Sunday night found themselves in the midst of an anti-judicial reform demonstration. The demonstrators surrounded the car and proceeded to attack them, lynching the husband. Israel National News spoke with the victim's wife about the traumatic incident and the media's silence.

"We were in Tel Aviv. We wanted to go home. We didn't know that there was a protest. There were no police there. We wanted to turn left with another car, and we found ourselves in the middle of the rage," she recalls. "They banged on the car and shouted curses at us. There was no option to drive in reverse, and my husband stopped when he saw that the protesters were blocking the road.

When he stopped, they surrounded us again, banged on the car, and tried to break the windows. The whole time I was screaming so people would see that we were just a lost couple and not someone who wants to cause harm," she states. "My husband said he'll open the door so they won't break the window. We didn't do anything. What do you want? They began beating him up. They got into the back of the car since the back seat was folded down. They beat him, I saw the blood, and he told me, 'take me to the hospital. I can't see out of this eye, and I'm going to faint.' I cried. I asked them to let us go, and they just continued."

She points out that in a video circulated on the internet, one of the protesters can be heard saying, "pull out their motor." "Why? Do you want him to bleed to death? What did we do to you? You already beat him up. And then I begged one of the demonstrators who wanted to come help. He got into the car and told me to dial the police so they could rescue us. I called, but the police said they had no officers at the scene and that I should go to the hospital. Somehow we made it. The police were not involved. Later, they said they would come to file a report, but they didn't.

Twitter Corrects Rep. Rashida Tlaib Who Shared False Story about Israel
Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) shared a tweet alleging that Palestinians celebrating the first night of Ramadan in Jerusalem were attacked by Israeli security forces.

Twitter appended commentary notes clarifying that the incident did not actually occur as Tlaib described it.

"This was not an attack by Israeli police. A brawl broke out among young Palestinians at Damascus Gate & Israeli police separated them to restore peace," Twitter noted.


Israeli Wounded by Lebanese Infiltrator Describes Highway Bombing
The Israeli-Arab man seriously wounded by a roadside bomb in the north of the country two weeks ago spoke to the media for the first time on Tuesday, describing the explosion that left him hospitalized.

“I slowed down and then there was an explosion, I didn’t see anything and then I couldn’t stop the car,” Shareef ad-Din, 21, an engineering student and a resident of the town of Salem, told Channel 12.

“I tried to stop the car and I didn’t see anything. I tried to open the door, but I felt resistance,” ad-Din said from Rambam Medical Center in Haifa where he is recovering with his family at his bedside.

Although ad-Dan was wounded in what the Israeli government calls “hostile action,” according to the report he did not initially receive this designation. However, after the Channel 12 news story aired, the National Insurance Institute contacted him and said that he would be recognized as a victim of hostile action. His claim was transferred to the Defense Ministry and approved on Tuesday.

The terrorist who placed the roadside bomb along the Route 65 highway near the Megiddo Junction on March 13 infiltrated the country from Lebanon using a ladder to climb over the border fence, said the Israel Defense Forces.

Equipped with a suicide vest and a rifle, the terrorist was subsequently killed by security personnel after being stopped at a checkpoint near the village of Ya’ara. A further investigation revealed that he moved around the country on an electric bicycle. Authorities are examining whether he received assistance with the battery.
Two Jewish men face terror charges for Huwara attack
An indictment was filed on Thursday against two Jewish residents of Samaria for attacking Palestinians with an ax and stones in Huwara on March 6, during the Purim holiday.

Hanoch Akiva Rabin, 25, from Givat Ronen, and Raz Chaim Goron, 21, from Yitzhar, were arrested on March 13 and transferred to the Israel Security Agency (Shin Bet) for further questioning.

“The two suspects belong to a violent group that works to harm Palestinians as well as to disrupt the activities of the security forces in dealing with thwarting Palestinian terrorism and maintaining public peace in the sector,” the Israel Police and Shin Bet said in a statement announcing the charges.

They are charged with terror-related offenses for the alleged attacks, which were caught on surveillance videos showing masked men targeting residents of Huwara.

Also on Thursday, National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir met with the parents of those accused of violence in Huwara, calling for their release from administrative detention where they were placed at the order of Defense Minister Yoav Gallant after their arrests.

“To me, it’s undemocratic to arrest a person and then throw him in jail without evidence or a trial,” Ben-Gvir said, according to a statement from his office.

"2023 Arab ‘Land Day’ Largely Uneventful – So Far"
With the current abundance of fierce political demonstrations and lethal encounters with Arab terrorists, we almost forgot that today, March 30, marks the 47th anniversary of Land Day, commemorating the 1976 bloody riots that followed the Rabin Government’s plan to expropriate thousands of acres that were held by Arab communities in the Galilee to expand the city of Karmiel. In response, Israeli Arabs declared a general strike and marches, which resulted in confrontations with the army and the police. Six Arab citizens were killed, about one hundred were wounded, and many were arrested.

Since then, March 30, the starting point of public protest and political mobilization on the part of Israeli Arabs, became the main Arab protest day every year, and a historical event of great importance. Before March 30, 1976, Arab protest against the government was quiet and mainly localized and did not create a deep resonance in Israeli society. After that date, the protest became more prominent and active, and the March 30 anniversary has been clearly and angrily expressed.

The Arab protest, above all, opposes the Judaization of the country and protests the treatment of the Israeli Arab population by the Jewish government.

So how come nothing significant has happened so far on March 30, 2023? Maybe the Israeli calendar year is saturated with too many anniversaries of bloody Arab uprisings. The anniversary of the Guardian of the Walls pogroms is coming up in May, to name one. But the fact is that this year, even Ha’aretz was too busy hating the sixth Netanyahu government to pay attention to the inequities of the first Rabin government.

Only the Arab League issued a statement supporting the “Palestinian steadfastness and the just struggle to restore the rights of the Palestinian people” on “Land Day.”

The representatives of the Arab countries called on the international community to “take responsibility and take serious steps to end the occupation, establish an independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital, and act to provide international protection for the Palestinian people.”
MEMRI: Palestinian Official: The Only Solution Is To Wage Armed Resistance Against Israel Until Palestine Is Liberated From The River To The Sea And From Ras Al-Naqoura In The North to Umm Rashrash In The South
In his February 25, 2023 column in the Palestinian daily Al-Quds, PLO National Council member Faisal Abu Khadra lambasted the Palestinian leaders, stating that they should be ashamed because they have made no progress towards resolving the Palestinian problem and have nothing to offer but promises and flowery speeches. Stating that the Palestinians yearn for a leader like Saladin who will unite the Islamic nation and liberate Palestine, he called on the Arab countries to wake up and make serious efforts to help the Palestinian people "with money, weapons, foreign policy and everything else [they] need." The only solution, he argued, was to wage armed resistance against Israel until all of Palestine is liberated, "from the river to the sea and from Umm Rashrash [Eilat, in the south] to Ras Naqoura [in the north]."

The following are translated excerpts from his column:[1]
"Where are Khalid Bin Al-Walid,[2] Tariq Bin Ziyad,[3] Hamza [Bin 'Abd Al-Muttalib] and 'Amr Bin Al-'Aas[4]? Where are Abu 'Ammar [Yasser Arafat], Khalil Al-Wazir,[5] Dalal Al-Mughrabi[6] and Sheikh Ahmad Yassin? Yes, all our [past] leaders are displeased with the leadership of our honorable leaders [today], who have nothing to offer but promises and flowery speeches, which the Palestinians, the wounded fathers and bereaved mothers… have grown deaf listening to. Today the people yearn for a Palestinian Saladin who will unite the nation under one banner and liberate our eternal homeland, Palestine…

"At the last Arab Summit in Algeria, we believed that the dispute [between the Arab countries] had been settled for good and that they had shaken off the dust of cowardice and of defrauding the long-suffering Palestinian people inside and outside occupied Palestine. The Palestinian leaders should be ashamed that they continue to weep over the Nakba, that has been ongoing for 75 years without any diplomatic horizon [or hope] for a solution to the Palestinian problem. [They must be ashamed that] they have attained only 22% of historical Palestine, and are still waiting for [the implementation of] international resolutions. The whole world has seen that these resolutions have not been implemented and will never be, because [not implementing them] serves the interests of the oppressive occupation, which is supported by the imperialist Western world, led by the racist U.S.

"Where are the Arabs and Arabhood? They convene and make decisions, but then fail to implement any of these decisions. And why do they not follow the advice of the late King 'Abd Al-'Aziz[7] -- who said explicitly, "Give the Palestinian people weapons and money, for they are capable of winning' -- while the occupation and its settlers murder our sons in cold blood every day?


PreOccupiedTerritory: Riot Over Drone’s ‘Desecration’ Of Al Aqsa Fizzles When Mob Realizes It Not Jewish (satire)
An incipient violent disturbance at the compound housing Judaism’s holiest site and claimed by Muslims as third-holiest dissipated today when would-be participants discovered that the craft hovering over the sacred site, in violation of its sanctity, was piloted remotely by someone not Jewish, a fact that made the forbidden device’s appearance over that location suddenly not a problem anymore.

Witnesses recalled that groups of angry worshipers and soccer-players on the holy plateau began pointing and shouting at a drone about 30 meters in the air above them, with the rhetoric escalating within minutes to include fears that “the Jews” were “defiling Al Aqsa with their filthy rotors” and concerns that Israeli security forces were spying on them.

Several tense moments passed before a group of soccer players began hurling their ball toward the drone – but the drone pilot moved the craft to avoid the ball each time. Others threw rocks or shoes, all of which missed the device. Six people sustained injuries from the rocks, including an elderly man who suffered a concussion and a teen whose glasses smashed and scratched his cornea. A third tripped and broke an arm while attempting to avoid a rock.

Within five minutes, however, word reached the unruly crowd that a Muslim worshiper some distance away was operating the device, news that for unexplained reasons removed the desecration from the drone’s presence at the Haram al-Sharif. The mob dispersed and its former participants returned to their previous activities atop the sacred plateau, such as stockpiling bricks and fireworks to aim at Israelis, or their holy games of soccer, jump-rope, tag, and relay races.


Senior Hezbollah Official says ‘The Internal Conflict in Israel will Cause its Downfall’
Sheikh Naim Qassem, Deputy Secretary General of the terrorist group Hezbollah, said during an interview with the Iranian state news agency Tasnim that “the internal conflict in Israel would be the main cause of the fall of the country”.

“We are witnessing the strengthening of the Palestinian resistance, while Israel is trying to strengthen the normalization project with the Arab countries, and to convince that Iran is the enemy of the Arab countries and not only its own”.

“However, today everything is changing, we are witnessing the gathering of the Arab countries of the region to create peace and stability between them,” he said, referring to the escalation of violence in the West Bank.

Qassem also announced that Hezbollah supports Sleiman Frangié’s candidacy for the presidency of Lebanon, stating that “the conditions and objective characteristics of Frangié made us see in him the person most suitable to hold the position”.

“All our actions, and the entire political history of Hezbollah, prove that we have always been honest with the Lebanese and we are also more honest than ever with the enemy,” he added.


IRGC Urges Palestinians To Take Advantage Of Turmoil In Israel
The spokesman of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard (IRGC) has called on the Palestinians to take advantage of recent protests in Israel to destabilize the country.

Brigadier General Ramezan Sharif said on Tuesday that “the occupied territories are the scene of confrontation of a movement within the Zionist regime that wants to stand against the totalitarianism of another wing.”

“This is a golden opportunity for the Palestinian fighters to take advantage of the situation,” he added.

The IRGC commander’s clear instigation of Palestinian youths comes as state media in Iran are also heralding that the domestic disagreements in Israel would lead to the “end of Zionism”.

Gen. Sharif told local media that Jerusalem's "liberation" is near, "thanks to the Palestinian struggle", and to Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei who "is the flag-bearer" of the fight against Israel. He also said that IRGC Gen. Qassem Soleimani played an important role in driving the "resistance". Soleimani was targeted and killed by the United States in Baghdad in January 2020.

The Islamic Republic officials have rejoiced by the political dispute over Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's effort to overhaul the country's judicial system.

Hardliner media, mostly controlled by the IRGC began publishing daily articles about a "looming civil war" in Israel and predicting its demise in the near future.
Greece Detains 8 New Suspects Under Probe of Terror Cell Targeting Jews
Eight new suspects from Pakistan were detained as part of the investigation into a terrorist network suspected of planning attacks against Jews in Athens, a Greek police source said Thursday.

“The investigation to determine if other people are involved is ongoing,” the source said.

These eight new suspects, who had already been detained in Greece for illegal residence, were in “close contact” with the two men arrested on Tuesday on suspicion of belonging to a “terrorist network” which was planning “strikes” from abroad.

The two Pakistanis of Iranian origin, aged 27 and 29, are suspected of planning an attack on a Jewish community building housing a synagogue and a kosher restaurant, also frequented by Israelis. On Tuesday, Greek police spokeswoman Konstantina Dimoglidou said the “brain” of the operation was “a Pakistani who lives outside of Europe”. Another police source, who wished to remain anonymous, said the person was living in Iran.

The Israeli Prime Minister’s Office reacted on behalf of the Mossad saying that this is “a serious matter which was successfully foiled by the Greek security forces. This is a new attempt by Iran to promote terrorism against Israeli and Jewish targets abroad.”

In a symposium on Wednesday in the European Parliament about countering radicalization, extremism and terrorism, members heard from colleagues and international legal experts about the need for the European Union to ban Samidoun: Palestinian Prisoner Solidarity Network.

The International Legal Forum (ILF) recently released a 22-page report calling on Europe to designate Samidoun as a terror group. Founded in 2012, Samidoun “serves as an affiliate for the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) terror group,” per the report.

“In 2021, the Israeli government designated Samidoun a terrorist organization on the basis of overwhelming and compelling evidence of the group’s connection to PFLP, which has also been proscribed as a terror group by the E.U., as well as the United States, Canada, Israel and others,” the report adds.

“Samidoun and Iran are two sides of the same jihadist coin,” Arsen Ostrovsky, CEO of ILF, told JNS.

“The decision to designate them as a terrorist organization, whether by the European Union or the United States, should not be done as some favor to Israel, but because continuing to ignore their lethal antisemitism and inseparable connection to Iran would be inexcusable negligence and a direct and clear security threat, including to the United States, where Samidoun is also active and continues to fundraise for their global operations,” explained Ostrovsky.

A new leader of the alleged “London office” of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps has described non-Muslims as living “like animals” and claimed that “Zionists” were behind the Islamic State group which beheaded Western journalists in Iraq.

The centre’s activities are already under investigation by the Charity Commission and it has been named as an “outreach centre” for the Islamic regime by senior MPs.

Now the Islamic Centre of England (ICE) in Maida Vale, north-west London, faces questions over its new deputy director Abbas Abedi who, the JC can reveal, made a series of inflammatory speeches including one claiming Jews slaughtered thousands of Muslim children and raped thousands of women.

In a speech about the foundation of Israel, delivered in Urdu in 2021, Abedi said: “Jews took revenge on Muslims and tens of thousands of Palestinians were made homeless, their kids were slaughtered, women raped, thousands violated, kids killed… the Zionist lobby made this possible, it became possible due to American and UK help.”

In another speech, available online, he said: “All people who are free believe that Zionism is the mother of terrorism. … Zionism is the mother of Isis. Don’t say ‘Islamic State’.Say ‘Israeli State in Iraq and the Levant’.”

In a speech at ICE in December 2020, he said of non-believers: “They live like animals. Like animals, they go for the food, they struggle to get some sort of rest, and then go back to fill their stomachs.” Abedi, also known as Mir Abbass Hussein, became a trustee of ICE in December.
