UMich diversity admin says the university is controlled by wealthy Jews; her lawyer says she was criticizing Israel

A federal judge Tuesday dismissed a discrimination lawsuit brought by a former University of Michigan diversity administrator Rachel Dawson, who was fired after allegedly making antisemitic remarks at a 2024 conference,

Dawson was accused of saying, “The university is controlled by wealthy Jews” during a conversation with two professors at an academic conference on diversity and equity in March 2024. 

She was also accused of saying, “We don’t work with Jews. They are wealthy and privileged and take care of themselves” and that “Jewish people have ‘no genetic DNA’ that would connect them to the land of Israel."

Dawson's lawyer, Amanda Ghannam, told Michigan Public that she still has a case pending before the Michigan Court of Claims regarding the free speech aspects of her termination.

"At the end of the day, she was fired for sharing her opinion about the situation in Palestine/Israel, including that she believes both groups of people deserve better leadership and equal rights, and her comments about the University’s attempts to address multiple types of bias on campus," Ghannam said.

It hasn't worked this time, but this is one instance of the "criticism of Israel" defense  being used for even the most wild antisemitic statements.
