UNICEF's one-sided, anti-Israel view

UNICEF used to be a respected organization advocating for children worldwide. But when it comes to Israel, especially since October 7, it has been willing to lie or misrepresent facts in many ways, large and small.

Here is the first paragraph of a press release from last month:

ROME/NEW YORK, 23 July 2026 – New analysis released today shows improvements in food security and child nutrition across the Gaza Strip. However, the United Nations cautioned that the progress, driven largely by expanded access to humanitarian food, nutrition, agricultural and health assistance, remains fragile. While access into Gaza has improved, only one crossing – Kerem Shalom/ Abu Salem – in the south of Gaza remains open, limiting the flow of essential goods that can assist with recovery and leaving the majority of the population dependent on humanitarian aid. The people of Gaza are still struggling to recover their livelihoods, local food systems and essential services.

Guess how many crossings were open to Gaza before the war?

Exactly one, Kerem Shalom. It managed to supply all of Gaza's needs by itself. I've visited there; it is huge. The UN cannot stop itself from blaming Israel for things that are not Israel's fault. Plenty of food is entering Gaza, more than enough for everyone; the only problem is distribution after the fact and Israel has little to do with that. UN agencies have plenty to do with it.

But another small detail shows how anti-Israel the UN is: calling the crossing "Kerem Shalom/ Abu Salem."

First of all, the Arab name is incorrect: it is Karm Abu Salem.

Secondly, there was never any Arab village or ruin or single tent there with that name. The kibbutz Kerem Shalom was opened in 1967; the Arabic name was created afterwards. Why? Because the idea of a Hebrew name for a Jewish area is so hateful to Arabs that they have to make up their own name.

And even the name they made up has a layer of lies. Kerem Shalom means "vineyard of peace." The Arabic equivalent would be Karm al-Salam. Karm Abu Salem means "the vineyard of Abu Salem," as if that is the name of an indigenous Arab who lived in the area. Of course, there is no such person, but it makes the Arabic name sound like it was there before Jews lived there.

If the Arabs want to make up their own names, no one can stop them. But when the UN officially adopts a made up arabic name that was created for no other reason but to claim it as theirs - a Jewish neighborhood inside the Green Line - that indicates that the UN is biased against Israel at every level, from the seemingly trivial nomenclature to the idea that even Israeli areas within the Green line are really Palestinian.
