Swedish minister from a Muslim family gets attention by wearing a Star of David at a debate

Simona Mohamsson is the leader of the Liberal Party (Liberalerna) in Sweden and serves as Minister for Education and Integration in the Kristersson government.

She participated in a debate ahead of elections on Monday evening - and she chose to wear a Star of David necklace.

Her original surname was Mohammed. Her father is described as a Sunni Palestinian and her mother a Lebanese Shia Muslim. Simona herself is an atheist.

At the debate, she talked about letters that the Left party members had written to Hamas terrorists in Israeli prisons. " I think the Left Party needs to be held accountable for sending love letters to Hamas and spreading fear on our streets. Is this really the Sweden we can expect after (the elections)?

When asked who her main point for the evening is, she replied, "It's basically about what kind of Sweden we want in the future. Is Sweden is still a sanctuary for Jews?"" and she added that she put on a necklace with the Star of David to mark the fight against antisemitism.

One columnist found the debate quite boring, except for Mohamsson. "The only one who acts a little new, different and unexpected – and who actually works well in this debate – is the Liberals' Simona Mohamsson. She has put on a Star of David to show that even people with her own Middle Eastern background, as she says, should show solidarity with the country's Jews and with the many Jewish children who go to school with a lump instead of butterflies in their stomachs. "

This is remarkable.
