Oh great. Now people are claiming ancient Japanese destructive spirits are Jewish.

Variants of this stupidity are popping up all over TikTok and Instagram:

The Wikipedia article on Tengu describes a lot of characteristics of this ever evolving creature, very few of which are associated with Jews, but who cares? They found a statue!

JWire reports:

CyberWell, a digital-compliance nonprofit and trusted partner of Meta, TikTok and YouTube, has alerted major social-media platforms to an antisemitic trend that appropriates Tengu imagery from Japanese folklore to demonise Jews.

The trend, which CyberWell said has circulated online since at least 2023, has attracted renewed attention in recent weeks across Meta platforms including Facebook, Instagram and Threads, as well as TikTok and X. Posts have appeared in English, French and Farsi.

Posts commonly pair Tengu illustrations with photographs of visibly Orthodox Jews or the “Happy Merchant”, a widely recognised antisemitic caricature. CyberWell said one Instagram post received more than 40,000 likes, while an X post promoting the comparison was viewed more than 249,000 times.

CyberWell said the vast majority of posts it identified did not use the terms “Jew” or “Jewish”.

Instead, users relied on visual juxtaposition, coded references and established antisemitic imagery to convey the message—an approach that may help the content bypass moderation systems that place substantial weight on text detection.

I noticed that too. They use the pictures and stay away from the word "Jews" to avoid moderation but the commenters fill in the connection and think they are so smart for noticing that the guy wearing tefillin and a kippah is a Jew. 

I'm still not quite sure of how this is supposed to work. Did the Japanese recognize that Jews were devils? Were there Jews in Japan 1300 years ago? Why would a Jewish tengu begin as a dog, then bird, before becoming a large nosed humanoid? 

Antisemites don't need logic. Here was a chance for literal demonization of Jews, so that's the important thing.
