Canadian students don't think protesting synagogues, boycotting Jewish businesses or saying Jews are too economically powerful is antisemitic

A national report on antisemitism at Canadian universities has a lot of very concerning findings. For now, let's look at Appendix D.

That describes an upcoming report that concentrates on surveying all Canadian students, not just Jewish students. And it mentions three findings:

[M]ajorities did not consider several forms of anti-Jewish targeting antisemitic, including boycotting Jewish-owned businesses because of their perceived Israel tie (54%) and protesting outside Jewish houses of worship (54%). More than half (55%) did not identify the statement that Jews have too much influence on the economy as antisemitic
This means that Canadian students don't even know blatant antisemitism when they see it.

This is a result of constant anti-Israel messaging combined with the false assertion that anti-Zionism has nothing to do with antisemitism. When you combine those two as facts, then every antisemitic act can be coded to be anti-Zionist.

For example, for the synagogue question, I'm sure that the answer given would be that they considered synagogues to be Zionist institutions and therefore open to protest. The wording of the first question, "boycotting Jewish-owned businesses because of their perceived Israel tie ," shows that perceptions of being pro-Israel is enough to justify targeting Jewish businesses.

And the last question, which is one of the most classic antisemitic tropes, isn't even recognized as antisemitic? Keep in mind that Jews are only 1% of the Canadian population, and most Canadians don't think that saying Jews have too much influence on the economy is anti-Jewish???

The survey is not only finding increased antisemitism. It is documenting the mainlining of antisemitism as if it is normal thinking. And that may be even worse.
